Mini Groom vs. Full Groom: Which Does Your Dog Need?

By Christina Rivadeneira · October 27, 2026

"Do I need the full groom, or will a bath do?" It is one of the most common questions we hear. The answer depends on your dog's coat, how long it has been since their last haircut, and what you want the visit to accomplish.

Here is what each service includes, which dogs need which, and how to combine them into a schedule that keeps coats healthy.

The quick difference

A Mini Groom is a refresh: your dog is bathed, dried, brushed out, and tidied, without a full haircut. A Full Groom is a reset: everything in the mini groom, plus a complete haircut and styling. Both happen one-on-one in our mobile spa at your home.

What is included in a Mini Groom

Our Mini Groom covers:

  • Luxury bath with shampoo and conditioner chosen for your dog's coat

  • Professional blow-dry and thorough brush-out

  • Nail trim

  • Gentle ear inspection and cleaning

  • Cologne spritz and a bandana or bow to finish

What is included in a Full Groom

Our Full Groom includes everything above, plus:

  • Full haircut and styling, breed-specific or custom

  • Scissor finish

  • Nail trim and file

  • Paw pad care, including trimming between the toes

  • Special care and handling for anxious and senior dogs

Which dogs usually need a Full Groom

  • Doodles, poodles, and poodle mixes. Their coats grow continuously and need regular haircuts to stay comfortable and mat-free. See our doodle grooming service.

  • Drop-coated breeds like Shih Tzus, Maltese, Yorkies, and Havanese.

  • Dogs with a style to maintain, including teddy bear cuts and Asian Fusion styling.

  • Any dog who is overdue, with a coat that has grown past its shape.

Which dogs often do well with a Mini Groom

  • Short, smooth coats like Labs, Beagles, and Boxers, who do not need haircuts.

  • Double-coated dogs who need a thorough bath and brush-out more than a cut. (Here is why we generally avoid shaving double coats, per the American Kennel Club.)

  • Dogs between haircuts who need to be clean, brushed, and comfortable.

The alternating schedule that keeps coats healthy

For many curly and long-coated dogs, the most effective plan alternates the two:

  • Week 0: Full Groom (haircut and reset)

  • Weeks 3 to 4: Mini Groom (bath, brush-out, nails, ears)

  • Weeks 6 to 8: Full Groom again

The mini groom in the middle catches tangles early, keeps nails short, and makes the next haircut faster and easier on your dog. Our guide to how often to groom a doodle goes deeper on schedules by coat type. For a sense of how service level affects the price, see our Charleston mobile grooming cost guide.

Add-ons work with either service

Either service can include extras. Popular choices include a Blueberry Facial, Paw Soak, teeth brushing, and nail polish. Ask at booking about what fits your dog.

How to decide at booking

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Has it been more than six to eight weeks since your dog's last haircut?

  2. Is the coat longer than you like, or losing its shape?

  3. Do you feel tangles when you comb down to the skin?

If you answered yes to any of these, book a Full Groom. If not, a Mini Groom will likely keep your dog fresh until the next cut.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mini groom and a full groom?

A mini groom includes the bath, blow-dry, brush-out, nail trim, and ear cleaning without a haircut. A full groom includes all of that plus a complete haircut, scissor finish, nail filing, and paw pad care.

How often should my dog get a full groom?

Most curly and long-coated dogs do best with a full groom every six to eight weeks, often with a mini groom in between. Short-coated dogs may rarely need a haircut at all.

Is a mini groom enough for a doodle?

A mini groom is a great in-between refresh for a doodle, but doodles still need regular full grooms to keep the coat at a manageable length and prevent mats.

Can I add extras to a mini groom?

Yes. Spa add-ons like a facial, paw soak, teeth brushing, or nail polish can be added to either service.
