How to Choose a Mobile Dog Groomer: 10 Questions

By Christina Rivadeneira · October 22, 2026

Grooming is close, hands-on work. Your dog is on a table with sharp tools near their eyes, ears, and paws, sometimes for a couple of hours. Choosing a groomer you trust matters more than choosing the closest or the cheapest.

These 10 questions help you compare mobile groomers on what really counts. We have included how we answer each one, so you know where Baci & Buca stands.

Questions about training and experience

1. What training do you have?

Professional grooming covers coat science, breed and pet styling, safe handling, and tool safety. Ask where the groomer trained and how long they have been grooming. Our founder, Christina Rivadeneira, is a master-certified groomer trained at the Merryfield School of Pet Grooming, with nearly a decade of hands-on experience. You can read more about Christina.

2. Do you have experience with my kind of dog?

Doodles, double coats, seniors, and anxious dogs each need specific skills. Ask for examples. We specialize in doodle grooming, Asian Fusion styling, and special care for anxious and senior dogs.

3. Do you keep up with continuing education?

Good groomers keep learning. Veterinary Partner, a veterinarian-reviewed resource, suggests asking about grooming certifications, continuing education on canine behavior and anxiety, and pet first aid and CPR training.

Questions about handling and safety

4. What happens if my dog gets stressed?

The right answer involves patience, breaks, and a willingness to stop. Preventive Vet advises that a groomer should stop if your dog shows moderate to high stress, for the sake of your dog and future grooms. We work at your dog's pace and will pause or adjust the plan rather than push through.

5. Will my dog be crated, and for how long?

The American Kennel Club lists this among the questions to ask before booking. In our van, your dog is the only dog, and there are no cages or crates at any point.

6. What is your emergency plan?

Ask what happens if a dog becomes ill, overheated, or injured during a groom. A thoughtful groomer will have a clear answer, including when they would stop and call you or your veterinarian.

Questions about the coat and the result

7. How do you handle matting?

Mats cannot always be brushed out safely. Ask how the groomer decides between dematting and clipping, and whether they will talk to you before taking the coat short. We assess the coat before we start and discuss options with you. Our guide to how often to groom a doodle explains how to prevent mats in the first place.

8. What is included, and how do you price it?

Compare what is actually in each service: hand drying, nails, ears, sanitary trim, haircut. Our Charleston mobile grooming cost guide explains what changes a quote. At Baci & Buca, pricing is tailored to your dog's breed, size, coat, and services, and we confirm the final price when we meet your dog.

Questions about the business

9. What does your van have on board?

A professional mobile spa should be clean, climate controlled, and well lit, with fresh water and proper equipment. Ours arrives self-contained with fresh water, climate control, and professional-grade grooming equipment.

10. How do I book, and how do you communicate?

Ask how booking works, how far ahead you need to schedule, and how the groomer confirms appointments. We use an online booking system with live availability, recommend booking one to two weeks ahead, and are reachable by phone or text at 855.25.GROOM.

How to read reviews

Reviews are useful when you read them for specifics. Look for recent reviews that mention your kind of dog, how the groomer handled a nervous or senior pet, and whether the owner felt informed. One-off complaints matter less than patterns. If a review raises a concern, ask the groomer about it directly; how they respond tells you a lot.

Red flags to watch for

  • Vague answers about training or experience

  • Pressure to rush or skip breaks for a nervous dog

  • No clear policy on matting or health concerns

  • Prices that change without explanation after the groom

  • Reluctance to let you see the van or ask questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a mobile dog groomer is reliable?

Ask about training, experience with your type of dog, how they handle stress and matting, and how they price their work. Then read recent reviews for specifics. A reliable groomer answers clearly and welcomes questions.

What certifications should a dog groomer have?

Look for formal grooming training from an established school and ongoing education. Veterinary Partner also suggests asking about pet first aid and CPR training and an emergency plan.

Is Baci & Buca a one-on-one mobile groomer?

Yes. Every appointment is one dog at a time in our mobile spa, with no cages, crates, or waiting rooms.

Can I ask questions before booking?
