Holiday Dog Grooming in Charleston: When to Book

By Christina Rivadeneira · October 13, 2026

Every year the same thing happens: the calendar fills up quietly in October, and by the week of Thanksgiving every groomer in the Lowcountry has a waitlist. If you want your dog looking (and smelling) their best when the family arrives, the most important step is simple. Book early.

Here is how we suggest planning a holiday groom across Charleston, Summerville, Mount Pleasant, and West Ashley, plus what to do between now and the appointment so your dog's coat is ready for it.

Why holiday grooming slots fill early

Most dog owners want the same thing at the same time: a fresh groom in the days just before Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's. Mobile grooming makes that crunch tighter, because each appointment is one-on-one. In our luxury mobile spa, your dog is the only dog in the van. Nobody is waiting in a crate while we finish someone else, which is better for your dog but means there are only so many appointments in a day.

Our FAQ recommends booking one to two weeks ahead in a normal month. For holiday dates, plan on three to four weeks, and earlier if you need a weekend or a specific day.

Work backward from your event

Start with the date that matters, then count back.

  • Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26, 2026): aim for a groom between the Friday before and the Tuesday of that week.

  • Christmas and holiday parties: book a groom four to seven days before your gathering so the cut has a day or two to settle.

  • Holiday photos: schedule the groom one to three days before the photo session for the crispest look.

  • Travel or boarding: groom before you leave, so your dog travels clean and comfortable.

If you have more than one event, consider two appointments: a Full Groom in mid-November and a Mini Groom refresh before Christmas.

Choose the right service for the season

The service you book shapes how long the fresh look lasts.

  • Full Groom is the complete head-to-tail session: bath, blow-dry, haircut and styling, nail trim and file, ear cleaning, and paw pad care. Choose it if your dog is due for a haircut or you want a polished holiday look.

  • Mini Groom covers the bath, blow-dry, brush-out, nail trim, and ear cleaning without the full haircut. It is ideal for short-coated dogs or as a between-cuts refresh.

  • Doodles and curly coats almost always need a full groom before the holidays. Our doodle grooming service includes a pre-bath brush-out to deal with tangles before they turn into mats.

Not sure which one fits? Our guide to how often to groom a doodle explains how coat type changes the schedule.

Keep the coat mat-free until the big day

A holiday groom can only be as good as the coat we start with. If mats build up between now and your appointment, your groomer may need to take the coat shorter than you planned. That is the safest, most comfortable choice for a matted dog, but it is rarely the look anyone wants in their holiday photos.

A few habits make a big difference:

  • Brush down to the skin, not just the surface. The American Kennel Club recommends gentle strokes that work all the way to the skin, and daily brushing for many long-coated breeds.

  • Pay attention to friction spots: behind the ears, under the collar and harness, armpits, and the backs of the legs.

  • Don't bathe a dog with mats. Water tightens mats against the skin. Chewy's vet-reviewed guidance suggests waiting and checking with your groomer or veterinarian instead.

  • Tell us about tangles when you book, so we plan the right amount of time.

Add a little holiday polish

The holidays are a good excuse for a few extras. Spa add-ons like a Blueberry Facial or a Paw Soak can be added to any groom, and our nail care service includes pet-safe polish in seasonal shades. Every groom finishes with a bandana or bow and a light cologne spritz.

Plan for house guests and a busy home

Holidays are exciting for people and often a lot for dogs: new visitors, travel, schedule changes, and unfamiliar food on the counter. Grooming at your home helps here. There is no car ride, no waiting room, and no crate, and your dog is back inside the minute we finish. If your dog gets nervous with change, let us know at booking so we can keep the visit calm and unhurried.

Lock in a recurring schedule for the new year

Many of our regular clients book their next appointment before we leave. A standing four- to eight-week schedule keeps coats healthier, makes each groom easier on your dog, and means you never have to scramble for a holiday slot again.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I book a holiday dog groom in Charleston?

Plan on three to four weeks for appointments the week of Thanksgiving or in the weeks before Christmas. In a typical month, one to two weeks ahead is usually enough.

Should I book a full groom or a mini groom before the holidays?

If your dog is due for a haircut, has a doodle or curly coat, or you want a polished look for photos, book a Full Groom. If your dog has a short coat or just had a haircut, a Mini Groom refresh is often all you need.

What if my dog is matted before the holidays?

Tell us when you book. Light tangles can often be brushed out, but tight mats close to the skin are usually safest to clip. Booking early gives us room to get the coat healthy before your event.
