Doodle Haircut Styles: Teddy Bear, Puppy & Lamb Cuts
Doodle haircuts go by a lot of names, and the same name can mean different things at different groomers. That makes it hard to ask for what you want. This guide explains the most popular doodle styles in plain terms, how much upkeep each one needs, and how to choose the right cut for your dog and your routine.
Why doodle cuts vary so much
Doodle coats are a mix of a poodle's curly, continuously growing coat and the straighter coat of a retriever, spaniel, or other parent breed. Even puppies from the same litter can have very different coats, from loose waves to tight curls. There is also no breed standard for doodles, so there is no single "correct" doodle cut. The best haircut is the one that suits your dog's coat and your life. Our doodle grooming page explains the coat types we see most often.
The teddy bear cut
The most requested doodle style. The body and legs are kept at a medium, fairly even length, and the face is scissored round and soft, so your dog looks like a stuffed animal.
Best for: owners who want the classic fluffy doodle look
Upkeep: moderate to high; brush several times a week and comb the face and legs
The puppy cut
A shorter, even length all over, usually with a rounded face. It keeps the youthful look with much less coat to maintain.
Best for: active dogs, busy households, and summer months
Upkeep: low to moderate
The lamb cut
The body is kept shorter while the legs are left fuller, which creates a soft, tailored silhouette. It is practical in warm weather while keeping some fluff.
Best for: owners who love fluffy legs but want an easier body coat
Upkeep: moderate; legs need regular combing
The short summer or "kennel" cut
A close, uniform cut, often used when a coat has matted or for dogs who swim constantly. It is not as plush, but it is comfortable and grows back.
Best for: water dogs, matted coats, and owners who cannot brush often
Upkeep: low
Asian Fusion-inspired doodle styles
For doodles with enough soft coat, we can add Asian Fusion elements: a rounder head, a donut muzzle, and plush, column-like legs. Read our Asian Fusion grooming guide to see what the style involves.

Face, ear, and tail options
You can mix and match details with any body length:
Face: round teddy face, a shorter tidy face, or a longer, natural "shaggy" look
Ears: left long, trimmed to match the face, or rounded short
Tail: a full plume, a tidy taper, or trimmed to match the body
Eyes: we always keep the hair around the eyes tidy so your dog can see clearly
How length affects matting and upkeep
The longer the coat, the more brushing it needs. If you can comb all the way to the skin several times a week, a teddy bear cut is realistic. If not, a shorter puppy or lamb cut will keep your doodle comfortable and save you from mats, which may otherwise force a shorter cut than you wanted. Longer, more detailed styles also take more time on the table, which is one reason grooming prices vary from dog to dog.
Lowcountry life matters too. Beach days, pool time, and humidity mean a doodle coat is often damp, and damp curls tangle quickly. If your doodle swims a lot, a shorter cut and a thorough rinse and dry after the water are your best friends.
How often to book
Most doodles need a Full Groom every six to eight weeks, often with a mini groom in between. Our guide to how often to groom a doodle breaks it down by coat type, and our comparison of mini grooms and full grooms explains how to alternate them.
